What is Hydro Jetting?

High-pressure water jetting, or hydrojetting, clears pipes of severe, persistent blockages by blasting them with highly pressurized water.  Because it does not use mechanical or chemical methods to clear blockages, water jetting is appropriate water pipes of all types, including sewers and drains. For all its simplicity and effectiveness, water jetting requires special equipment and trained professionals. When the right tools and the right people come together, water jetting is the safest, most reliable way to clear effective pipes and protect water systems from future impairments.

How Water Jetting Works

You won’t find water-jetting equipment in a home-improvement store. water jetter, as hydrojetting rigs are commonly known, consists of a heavy-duty hose, an industrial-strength nozzle, a water tank capable of delivering sustained volumes of water, and a pump and motor that deliver extraordinarily intense water pressure.

Most of these pieces of equipment resemble those used in similar applications. The hoses used in water jetting, for instance, are similar to those used by firefighters. The nozzles, though, are specific to water jetting. Different nozzles are used to clear different types of obstruction, but each features an ingenious self-propulsion design. Most of the jets, or holes, in a hydrojetting nozzle face forward, to actively break up clogs and clear debris. Some, though, face backward, allowing the nozzle to feed itself through water pipes until it finds an obstruction.

This action is not entirely self-guided: a trained technician must be on hand to pause the hose’s progress when it encounters a blockage, and to keep it in place until the job is entirely done. The technician also performs a pre-diagnostic of the water system and the nature of the obstruction, then chooses the right nozzle for the job.  In untrained hands, water jetting can cause far more problems than it corrects.

First, the technician lowers the hose into the affected water line, positioning it just behind the first known obstruction.

Then the technician engages the pump’s motor, which sends pressurized water through the hose and eventually through the nozzle.

The nozzle guides the hose through the now-cleared line until it reaches another obstruction, or until the line is confirmed to be clear of blockages. When the job is complete, the technician returns the hose to its original position.

How Water Jetting is Different From Other Drain Cleaning Methods

By using water to clear obstructions in water lines, a properly administered water jetting treatment is superior to other forms of line-clearing. Here’s why.
